A first date coming up? How lekker. At our age the best outings are unhurried, close to a comfortable seat and never far from a pot of tea and a bathroom. Here are six ideas that suit an 80 year old pace, whether you are in Bloemfontein or Ballito.
Lunch is the clever choice. It is quieter, the light is better and nobody has to drive home after dark. A farm stall restaurant, a tea garden or the restaurant at your local golf club all work well. Ask for a table in the shade and away from the kitchen, and take your time over the malva pudding.
A short, flat walk makes conversation easier, because you are side by side instead of face to face. A beachfront promenade, a park with plenty of benches or a stroll round a shopping centre on a hot day is ideal. Go early before the heat, wear a good hat and take water.
Most towns have a museum, a historic church or an old Cape Dutch homestead that locals rarely get round to visiting. They tend to be quiet, have seating and are full of conversation starters. Many offer a pensioner rate, so it is always worth asking at the door.
Kirstenbosch, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden or the Durban Botanic Gardens all make a beautiful setting. Kirstenbosch even runs a little guided golf cart tour for those who prefer not to walk too far. Benches are everywhere, and a tea room is never far off.
Museums and galleries are cool in summer, warm in winter and usually have lifts and seating. A favourite painting, an old photograph of your home town or a display about the railways can start stories that last all afternoon.
A proper high tea is a treat at any age: dainty sandwiches, scones, koeksisters and a pot of tea for two. Hotels, tea gardens and wine estates all serve their own version. Book ahead and mention any dietary needs.
Wherever you go, meet somewhere public, let a friend or family member know your plans, and arrange your own way there and home again. Most of all, enjoy each other's company.
